BattleJacket Containment Systems
Protective coatings for the Defence industry
Abstract: An urgent requirement existed for the Army to prevent and/or minimise fuel leakage on fuel tankers due to small arms fire from insurgents. A self-sealing/self-healing external fuel tanker membrane system was developed to meet this urgent need. The system utilises technology developed by Rhino Linings® & High Impact Technologies™ (HIT). The membrane uses a spray polyurethane elastomer and proprietary additive, which are combined to expand and permanently seal the undesired holes from ballistic penetration. A specialised application process was also developed to allow the US military to apply the system to fuel tankers in the field and the theater.
Mission: Saving Fuel, Saving Lives
- To prevent and/or minimise fuel leakage of fuel tankers due to small-arms fire
- To eliminate fuel leakage resulting in hazardous conditions: fire, explosion, and death
- The BattleJacket™ (FCS) coating is based on a specially formulated fire-resistant urethane.
- US military designation for this spray coating technology is called Fuel Tank Self-Sealing (FTSS)
Technology – From Practical to Tactical: During the spray process, a proprietary additive is embedded into the formula which is activated when exposed to fuel. This additive acts in conjunction with the urethane to tightly seal off the undesired entrance and exit holes created by a projectile.
BattleJacket Containment Systems Application Process for Fuel Tankers
- A specialized process was developed that required a closed-in spray booth with unique equipment to apply the additive.
- A mobile spray application facility has been developed to bring the process to any location.
- Specific thicknesses of the coating have been developed for various tank geometries, tank substrates, and ballistic threats.
- Now serving in multiple battle arenas

Future Applications of BattleJacket Fuel Containment System
The BattleJacket Fuel Containment System (FCS) is the appropriate technology for any vulnerable vehicle, train, or ship-based fuel tank. Its self sealing tank and self-healing properties make it especially valuable in environments prone to accidental or hostile damage.
This technology is not limited to fuel tankers; it is also highly applicable to fuel storage tanks, pipelines, and other critical fuel infrastructure worldwide.
By preventing leaks and minimizing the risk of fire or explosion, BattleJacket™ FCS offers a reliable and long-term solution for industries focused on fuel transport and storage, ensuring both safety and cost efficiency.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
1. What is fuel tank coating?
A fuel tank coating is a protective layer applied to the inside or outside of a fuel tank to prevent corrosion, abrasion, and chemical damage. It helps protect the tank from environmental factors and improves its durability.
2. How does a self sealing fuel tank work?
A self sealing fuel tank uses special layers that automatically close punctures caused by bullets or shrapnel. When exposed to fuel, these layers expand to seal the hole, preventing leaks and reducing fire risks.
3. What is the purpose of tank coating?
The purpose of tank coating is to protect the tank from corrosion and wear, extend its lifespan, and prevent fuel leaks. It also improves safety by reducing the risk of damage from environmental or chemical exposure.
